Another Milestone Achieved at the CI4C Construction Site!

The new clinker silo has arrived! On 12 February, the first section was successfully installed, followed by the second section on the following day.

Why is the silo so important?
With a storage capacity of 650 tonnes, CI4C can temporarily store the clinker produced directly on site and carry out its own production campaigns using the research and development facility being established in Mergelstetten.
The clinker will also be used for research and development purposes.

The installation was a true feat of precision engineering: on the first day, the clinker silo, measuring 8 metres in diameter and weighing 62 tonnes in its pre-assembled state, was positioned with millimetre accuracy using state-of-the-art technology and in accordance with the highest safety standards. On the second day, the steel structure together with the associated plant equipment above the clinker silo was installed, adding a further 33 tonnes in weight.

An impressive operation that would not have been possible without a strong team effort.

A big thank you to everyone involved!

About CI4C
In 2019, four European cement manufacturers – Buzzi SpA/Dyckerhoff GmbH, Heidelberg Materials AG, SCHWENK Zement GmbH & Co. KG, and Vicat S.A. – joined forces to form the research company CI4C GmbH & Co. KG. Their shared objective is to realise the CO₂ capture project “catch4climate” at SCHWENK’s cement plant site in Mergelstetten. The new facility, into which more than €120 million is being invested, will be the first to employ the Pure Oxyfuel process for CO₂ capture. To this end, a dedicated rotary kiln line with a clinker production capacity of 450 tonnes per day is being constructed exclusively for research and development purposes.
